7 Tips for a Successful Kitchen Remodel

7 Tips for a Successful Kitchen RemodelThe kitchen is the room that is used the most in any household. It’s also the most expensive remodeling project – and has the highest potential return in increased home value. So if you’re remodeling the kitchen you want to do it well. Here are seven tips that will help you make the project successful.

Don’t Quibble about Quality

It’s possible to pay thousands extra for unneeded upgrades, so avoid that mistake. But don’t go bargain hunting and end up with a disappointing room that doesn’t last. Look for functionality and durability first, then look for low maintenance and long warranties. There are beautiful materials that are also durable, so take the time to find the right ones for you.

Plan with Priorities

Well begun is halfway done, the old proverb says, and it holds true with kitchen remodels. Plan carefully and you’re halfway to success. Think carefully about traffic flow through the kitchen and plan 36 inch walkways. In the cooking triangle, create 42 inch work aisles. Think of safety also, avoiding sharp corners and placing microwave ovens about 3 inches below the shoulder of the tallest user. Don’t forget to plan access to outdoor areas.

Former Footprint

If you can manage it, keep the footprint of your current kitchen and save big on the remodeling budget. This will help with plumbing, demolition and reconstruction costs.

Locate your Lighting

Great lighting makes a huge difference in the usability of your space. Consider LED under-cabinet lights, pendant lights over islands, and recessed or track lights over work areas. The ambient lighting can be on separate switches, perhaps with dimmers for different moods.

Appropriate Appliances

While the top, professional appliances may look appealing, are you a professional cook who will really take advantage of such units? If not, go with appliances highly rated by consumer websites like Consumer Reports or Amazon and save lots of money.

Supersize the Storage

You don’t need to increase the footprint of the kitchen to add more storage space. Instead, look at cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling, storing serving dishes and little-used holiday items in the top shelves. Mount hanging shelves and racks inside cabinet or pantry doors and use a ceiling rack for large pots and pans. An appliance garage and side cupboards add storage as well.

Communicate Clearly

Make sure you start talking to any contractors or other professionals early in the process, and keep talking. Set up a system for communication when you can’t see each other in person, such as a white board or sticky notes. Let the contractor know your expectations about noise, smoking, bathrooms, parking and clean up. Establishing these rules early saves stress later.
