When you mention that you are a contractor you hear from people you meet all the horror stories that there have had or people they know have had.  When you are remodeling your home that is costing you a big bundle of money you want to make sure that you are hiring someone you can trust and depend on.  Chris Nelson, Peak Construction has many satisfied clients.   Please check the list below for useful information on how to hire a contractor found from

If you’re in the market for a contractor to take care of your next home project, we have a couple tips to keep your remodel in trustworthy hands.

Start a list of prospect contractors

-Take a second to ask yourself if your family or friends have recently had any work done to their homes?  Word-of-mouth prospects can be some of the most accurate reviews of home contractors.

-Utilize the Internet’s resources – and search for options.  Obtain contact information for several options.  Try the National Association of the Remodeling Industry’s site.

-Look into calling a matching service, which prescreens contractors for you.

Pre-screen the list

-Check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints listed about the specific individuals chosen.

-Check the license number for each contractor online.

Contact contractors for Interviews

-You will now want to make a list of each contractors project quotes and availability – including what days of the week and what times they will be able to work in your home.

Remember, cheaper may not always better.

-Make sure you hear more then just the price – understand what the quote includes (materials, labor, etc.).

-Follow your gut feelings – if you feel the individual may be unprofessional – you might be right.  Cross them off the list.

-Ask for References from past jobs – be prepared to contact these references to hear what their prior customers have to say.

Ask the contractor to bring pictures or give you a link to a website which may have photos of their prior work.

Final round of decisions

-Be sure to contact your local or state housing authority – they will inform you of the license and bonding criteria for your project – make sure your contractor meets these requirements.

-Contact the contractors insurance company and obtain certificates of insurance– it is very important that they are covered with workers compensation and general liability.

This will ensure you will not be held liable if any damage is done to your home or any worker gets injured on the job.

Once you have chosen your contractor match – make sure to read the contract.  You will want to understand the terms to prevent future misunderstandings. In terms of payments – make sure a schedule is set and agreed upon by all parties involved.   A reasonable down payment is 30%, and the total cost of the project should not be paid in full until you are happy with the entirety of the finished remodel.
